Mario Hanausek (Austria) - Program Director/Head Coach

Mario hails from Austria and is 33 years old. He grew up with skiing and went to Ski High School and Ski Business School in Austria. He has worked as a Coach and Ski instructor since 2003, 6 seasons in the Southern Hemisphere, the last 3 as Head Coach at Falls Creek Race Club in Australia as Northern Hemisphere Coach for Austrian FIS athletes and the Australian FIS junior team. Mario holds a 'C-Trainer' Coaches qualification - the highest coaching qualification in Austria. Mario is an ex-racer and former Austrian u16 and Tropheo Topolino Austrian Demo Ski Champion. Mario brings with him a blend of Austrian technical expertise and understanding of Australasian athletes. He is very excited to be working with QAST and looks forward to a great season working with the coaches, athletes and community.

Angus Rose (New Zealand) - Senior Head Coach FIS

As a past QAST and NZ Ski team athlete Angus has coached with QAST for the past 15 years and has been our Head FIS Coach since 2005. Angus brings a wealth of knowledge to the QAST environment including international coaching experience in the U.S, Italy, Switzerland, Spain and Canada. Angus is really pumped to be back and is looking forward to an epic season.

Bjorn Nordahl (Sweden) - FIS Coach

Bjorn returns this year after joining QAST in 2013. Originally from Sweden he's happy to call Queenstown home again this winter.  With an extensive career spanning some 34 seasons as an Alpine Race Coach and Ski Instructor in Sweden, Australia, USA, Austria and New Zealand. Bjorn has been coaching at the Nyberg Race Camp at Åre, Sweden for the past few Northern Hemisphere seasons as well as working as a Trainer and examiner at SLAO's Instructor Academy.  Southern Hemisphere winters have seen him working as a full time FIS Coach at Team Hotham in Australia.  Bjorn also works as a contributor for writing a blog about ski technique and personal improvement in addition to providing skiing videos.

Marco Tomasi (Italy) - Head Coach U16




Marco has been a Ski Cross World Cup athlete since 2010 for Italy.  In 2016 Marco placed 10 times in top 32 from 12 starts. His World Champs career best result was 8th in Voss  (NOR) in 2013. Marco did not qualified for Sochi 2014 Olympic Games because of injury in January 2014. Prior to Ski Cross he was a Europa Cup  Alpine Racer for Team Italy.  His best alpine career results were, 2 times Italian Junior Champion (GS,SG), 2 times 2nd placed Italian Junior Champion (DH, COMB), 3rd placed Italian Junior Champion (DH), Italian Super-G Champion, 29 times top 5 and 55 times top 10 in international F.I.S. Races. FIS Points: DH-24 SG-19 GS-26 SL-47 SC-34

Marco also has extensive Strength and conditioning Knowledge as an athlete and qualifications as a coach, and can't wait to get to Queenstown to work with our athletes.




 Peter Kuwall (United Kingdom) - Part-time Coach U14

Peter has worked in the Snowsport Industry for over 30 years. He started ski racing when he was 6 and quickly got to the top of British ski Racing including winning national events.  He left school to go to University and studied Civil Engineering, after University he went back into ski racing and spent two years with the British ski Team. He finished racing in 1987 with around 50 FIS points in Slalom and Giant Slalom. He typically did 3 FIS downhills and 3 FIS Super G races each winter for 4 winters as speed training based mostly in Austria.  He is married with two sons 11 years old and 16 years old they have grown up mostly in France and they are in the local ski club. In the last 10 year he has been mostly involved in running his own ski school in France and delivering and examining Coach and Instructor education on behalf of BASI. He has also spent the last 8 New Zealand winters working for Rookie Academy at Treble Cone.




Federico Detragiache (Italy) - Lead Coach U14




Federico is 28 and is from Aosta Valley, Italy. He has always loved winter and snow and had his first skiing experience at 4 years old. He joined a ski club at the age of 8 and did 10 years of competitive ski racing. In 2007 he became a ski instructor and has since focussed on improving his knowledge about mountains and skiing. In 2009 he studied as at ski coach and focussed on training young athletes, not only for competitions, but also teaching them the best way to enjoy the snow with activities like freeride, freestyle and telemark. Over the past 8 seasons he has been coaching at FIS, U16 and U14 level for the Ski Club Pila.

 Jeanie Black-Dunlop (New Zealand) - Lead Coach U10/U12



First on skis at 18 months old Jeanie has skied every year since. Joining a weekly development program around the age of 9, Jeanie quickly progressed into Whakapapa Alpine Racing later Ruapehu Snow Sports. During that time she balanced her high school studies with full time ski training during winter in New Zealand and travelled to Canada, Europe and Japan during the summer months. Jeanie competed in Regional races in Sliver Star and Sun Peaks in Canada and throughout New Zealand, including two years of FIS competing in Slalom, GS and Super-G. 

Jeanie’s first coaching job was at Snowplanet 10 years ago and most recently she spent 6 months coaching at Ski Dubai. Jeanie is grateful for the values and skills she learnt through ski racing and looks forward to having fun and sharing these with the athletes while helping develop a create community of skiers.

Andy McKinlay (United Kingdom) - Part-time Coach U10 / U12

Andy is from London, UK which isn't renown for its amazing skiing so being a late starter to the ski world he didn't manage to get skis on until his late teens!! Once they where on however they have been hard to get off. He started ski touring and mountaineering in Norway and France and then from 2011 decided to become a full-time instructor doing back to back seasons. Calling Hokkaido Japan home for most of the year he splits his time guiding and instructing and when in NZ has been working at The Remarkables for the last 3 years and before that in the South Island club fields.

Lucy Brown (NZ) - Part-time Coach U10/12

Lucy Brown is a Queenstown local currently completing NCEA Level 3 at Wakatipu High School. She was raised on a small farm breeding stud sheep. From the age of 7-14 she was involved in Alpine Ski racing. She competed successfully at national level consistently placing in the top seven. She trained locally with QAST for four years, being taught by top coaches from around the world including Tim Cafe, Veronica, Michael, Chris Knight and Ian Mclean. Lucy is a very competitive person, having been brought up from a child competing at a national level both with equestrian, on the show jumping circuit, and alpine ski racing. She describes herself as a perfectionist who is motivated to do well and she is excited to be able to join our team as a part-time coach and share her passion.
